Undreaming the Dream House, 2023
During 2023, in response to a prompt from the Dia Foundation in New York, I took up the question of the legacy of Early Minimalism (to use Tony Conrad’s term) and especially it’s relationship to the artist and musician Marian Zazeela. I had recently seen Zazeela’s drawings at Dia Beacon, and wanted to think more deeply about them and the circumstances that produced their place, or non-place, in the postwar avant-garde in New York. The body of work so far includes my ‘Artists on Artists’ lecture on Zazeela at Dia Chelsea, a composition for voice and a pair of 14-inch dub plates —”Undreaming the Dream House”— that Jessika Kenney premiered at Dia, a solo exhibition —also titled “Undreaming the Dream House” — at Radicants International in Paris, and also on that occasion, a conversation with critic and art historian Bastien Gallet, as well as some additional performances at places such as Sonic Protest in Paris.
